Mark Twain is attributed with the saying "Those who don't read have no advantage over those who can't."
We are now a couple generations away from our forefathers who abandoned classical education. We are now the generation that does not even know what it has lost. Wes Callihan gives a glimpse at the kind of richness we have lost in this excerpt from the Old Western Culture curriculum on the great books of Western civilization. If you don't study the classics, you have no advantage over those who can't. Roman Roads Media provides tools to help you accomplish this task! Get started today!

Shelia Hill grew up in San Francisco’s Sunnydale Projects. It was a rough neighborhood. She got into trouble when she was young and dropped out of school. She thought it wasn’t for her. Hill’s attitude changed after she had her own children. One day, her son asked why he should bother going to school since she didn’t. It was a lightbulb moment. Hill realized that she had to do better for herself and her family. She learned how to read and got her high school diploma through Five Keys, an organization that gives members of underserved communities a chance to restart their education. Today, Hill works for Five Keys as community ambassador. She goes out into neighborhoods considered education deserts on the Five Keys bus and encourages residents to board the mobile classroom where they can study with a teacher and earn their GEDs. Hill doesn’t want anyone to feel ashamed for not finishing school. So she always makes sure to share her own story, letting people know there was a time when she couldn’t read. And she’s big on follow-up with potential students. “I’ll call them. I’ll bug them. I’ll text them. I’ll email ’em. Whatever it takes,” she says. “I just want you to get your education. That’s it.”

US First Lady Michelle Obama gives her keynote speech on educating girls worldwide at this year's World Innovation Summit for Education Opening Ceremony.
She focused on the importance of adolescent girls' education and our need to support them as equal citizens with equal potential as our adolescent boys. Gender parity in primary schools across the world has greatly improved but there is still a critical gap between the scolarisation of teenage girls and teenage boys in secondary schools and beyond. For the First Lady, investing in girls' education needs to be accompanied by dramatic changes in our attitude towards the role of women in our societies.
"We cannot address our girls' education crisis until we address the cultural norms and practices that devalue women's intelligence, that silence their voices and limit their ambitions."
In her inspiring keynote address, First Lady Michelle Obama encourages men and women to hold the same dreams for their daughters as they do for their sons - not just for the girls themselves but also for the development of our societies as a whole.

Entrepreneurship education has become much more than teaching students how to start a business or write a business plan. Tom Byers, a professor of engineering at Stanford University for over twenty years in this subject, shares four examples of this wide adoption of active and experiential learning to accelerate all student’s careers. First, a recent graduate Deanna Badizadegan tells her story about how entrepreneurship education has shaped her career path and her passion for music including a short performance on viola. Then Professor Byers give more examples of entrepreneurship education in action on a national scale (e.g., NSF-funded programs to reach to hundreds of USA colleges) and on an international scale (via a required course of all undergraduates in the United Arab Emirates). The fourth and last example illustrates how these principles can apply to other domains such as national security and government.
At Stanford University since 1995, Professor Tom Byers focuses on education regarding high-growth entrepreneurship and technology innovation. He has been a faculty director since the inception of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, which serves as the entrepreneurship center for the engineering school. He is a principal investigator and the director of the Epicenter, which is funded by the National Science Foundation to stimulate entrepreneurship education at all USA engineering and science colleges. He is the co-author of a textbook called Technology Ventures: From Idea to Enterprise, published by McGraw-Hill.
Byers is a past recipient of the prestigious Gordon Prize by the National Academy of Engineering in the USA and Stanford University's Gores Award, which is its highest honor for excellence in teaching. Tom holds a BS in industrial engineering and operations research and an MBA from UC Berkeley. He also earned a PhD in business administration at UC Berkeley.

The Education of a Value Investor: My Transformative Quest for Wealth, Wisdom, and Enlightenment
About the Book:
What happens when a young Wall Street investment banker spends a small fortune to have lunch with Warren Buffett? He becomes a real value investor. In this fascinating inside story, Guy Spier details his career from Harvard MBA to hedge fund manager. But the path was not so straightforward. Spier reveals his transformation from a Gordon Gekko wannabe, driven by greed, to a sophisticated investor who enjoys success without selling his soul to the highest bidder. Spier’s journey is similar to the thousands that flock to Wall Street every year with their shiny new diplomas, aiming to be King of Wall Street. Yet what Guy realized just in the nick of time was that the King really lived 1,500 miles away in Omaha, Nebraska. Spier determinedly set out to create a new career in his own way. Along the way he learned some powerful lessons which include: why the right mentors and partners are critical to long term success on Wall Street; why a top-notch education can sometimes get in the way of your success; that real learning doesn’t begin until you are on your own; and how the best lessons from Warren Buffett have less to do with investing and more to do with being true to yourself. Spier also reveals some of his own winning investment strategies, detailing deals that were winners but also what he learned from deals that went south. Part memoir, part Wall Street advice, and part how-to, Guy Spier takes readers on a ride through Wall Street but more importantly provides those that want to take a different path with the insight, guidance, and inspiration they need to carve out their own definition of success.
About the author:
Guy Spier is a Zurich based investor. In June 2007 he made headlines by bidding US$650,100 with Mohnish Pabrai for a charity lunch with Warren Buffett. Since 1997 he has managed Aquamarine Fund, an investment partnership inspired by, and styled after the original 1950′s Buffett partnerships.
Prior to starting Aquamarine Fund, Spier worked as an investment banker in New York, and as a management consultant in London and Paris.
Mr. Spier completed his MBA at the Harvard Business School, class of 1993, and holds a First Class degree in PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) from Oxford University. Upon graduating, he was co-awarded the George Webb Medley prize for the best performance in that year in Economics. While at Oxford he was a contemporary of David Cameron at Brasenose and attended economics tutorials with him.
Spier is the CEO of the Spier family office. He also serves on the advisory board of Horasis, and is a co-host of TEDxZurich.
Spier is a member of YPO, EO, Zurich Minds and the Latticework Club.
Aquamarine has offices in New York, London and Zurich where Mr. Spier currently resides with his wife Lory and their three children, Eva, Isaac and Sarah.

Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, author of best-selling books on education, and Founder and President of Educational Strategies, shares her epiphany on why American schools lag far behind those of other countries. Hint: It's not the teachers' fault. It's not the students, parents, unions, tenure, too much homework, too little homework, or even too much testing. The problem, pure and simple, is grades and fear of grade inflation. The American grading system forces our teachers to "Anti-Teach." This TEDxBeaconStreet talk, excerpted from the author's upcoming book "Gotcha Grading," reveals how eliminating our grading system could bring American education back up to the top.
Author and educator Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, most known for her best-selling books on educational opportunities for high school students, is the Founder and President of Educational Strategies, a leading international consulting company that connects ambitious high school students worldwide with the top American college opportunities.

The word education comes from a Latin word that means to lead forth.
Forth is a value-laden term.
It raises a question, which way is forth? How do you know you’re going in the right direction?
The easy answer in our time is, “It just depends on which way you want to go.”
Young people almost always say that today. They’ve been taught to say that. But, that’s the wrong answer.
At Hillsdale College, we understand education to be the pursuit of the highest answer to that question.
Discovering the right way by reading the greatest books by the greatest minds in history.
Coming to see the meaning of three ultimate and related things, the good, the true, and the beautiful.
This is the way forth.
This is education.

In 1962, JFK gave a speech to the nation challenging them to make a "great national effort." He held the La Sierra High PE up as the model for the nation to follow. 4,000 high schools followed this program. This is the only known digitized copy of his speech. The footage shows one high school PE class. Remember, this is a normal PE class at the high school. This was PE 50 years ago in America! This is just a small part of a full documentary film project we are working on that shows the "why" behind vigorous physical exercise. It has interviews with top MD's and Ph.D's from Harvard Medical School, MIT, Cleveland Clinic, MUSC, etc., and summarizes over 1,000 peer reviewed studies linking vigorous physical exercise to emotional health, high academic test scores, and productivity.
This is not about our waist line. We plan to bring it to theaters in the summer of 2016. Help us make this film a reality. Consider supporting the full documentary film project here: https://www.indiegogo.com/proj....ects/jfkchallenge/x/
