I think it is instructive that each new technology has appeared to be so transformative. You can imagine, for example, that motion pictures must have seemed like a revolutionary learning technology. After all they did revolutionize entertainment, yet failed to make significant inroads into the classroom. TV and video seem like a cheaper, scaled back film, but they too failed to live up to expectations. Now there is a glut of information and video on the internet so should we expect it to revolutionize education?

My view is that it won't, for two reasons: 1. Technology is not inherently superior, animations over static graphics, videoed presentations over live lectures etc. and 2. Learning is inherently a social activity, motivated and encouraged by interactions with others.

In this talk, Dorinda Carter Andrews challenges us to consider how gaps in critical consciousness and mindsets for adults and students in schools prevent us from providing equitable schooling experiences for all students. Specifically, Carter Andrews urges educators to consider how increased critical consciousness about the role of race and culture in teaching and learning can be fostered through educator professional development and student curriculum and can ultimately strengthen teacher-student relationships. A shifted focus on closing consciousness gaps can address the equity imperative embedded in the larger discourse about achievement gaps.

On February 11, Dorinda received the MSU 2014 Outreach Scholarship Community Partner Award for her collaboration with school districts to close achievement gaps. Further, on March 1, she received the Alumni of Color Achievement Award at the 2014 Alumni of Color Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dorinda Carter Andrews is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University where she teaches courses on racial identity development, urban education, critical multiculturalism, and critical race theory. Dr. Carter Andrews is a Core Faculty member in the African American and African Studies program and a Faculty Leader in the Urban Educators Cohort Program, a program designed to prepare MSU pre-service students for teaching careers in urban contexts.

In this talk, Sonam Wangchuk shares his experience of bringing education reforms in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, India.

Sonam Wangchuk is the founder of Students' Educational & Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL).
While he was doing his mechanical engineering at NIT Srinagar he understood the hardships faced by the Ladakhi students in the government schools; 95% of them were failing in their matric exams every year. Once he finished his graduation, he went back to Ladakh and started SECMOL together with some like-minded youth.

After initially starting with coaching classes to help matric students, they soon realized that for a lasting solution they needed to bring reforms in the village primary schools. So they launched an education reform movement in collaboration with the government. Within seven years the results went up from 5% to 55%. Today it stands at 75%. For those who still failed, they set up a very special and innovative school which has produced many inspiring stories.
