'Stop teaching calculating, start learning maths' - Conrad Wolfram on how re-conceptualized maths in education can step up to real-world needs.

The importance of maths to jobs, society and thinking has exploded over the last few decades. Meanwhile, maths education fails to match-up. Why has this chasm opened up? Computers are central: when they do the calculating, people work on harder questions, try more concepts, and play with a multitude of new ideas. Conrad Wolfram explained why this fundamental shift is needed in education, and described the major project he's founded to build a dramatically new, problem-centric, computer-based maths curriculum. He asked which country could adopt a computer-based approach first, and leapfrog others in STEM.

Professor Ariel Novoplansky talks about the unique way in which plants communicate through their roots. Via a complex system of non-verbal communication, plants are able to warn each other of impending danger and experiences. With his team of research scientists, Prof. Novoplansky has mapped the ways in which plants communicate, an important factor in agricultural planning, and also proven that plants have memory.

Prof. Novoplansky was born and raised in Israel and received his Ph.D. in ecology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Following a post-doc period at the University of Michigan he joined the Mitrani Department of Desert Ecology, Institutes for Desert Research of the Ben-Gurion University.

His scientific work focuses on evolutionary ecology of plants. His current research is related to the evolutionary rationale and physiological mechanisms enabling plants to make developmental decisions based on information they perceive from their environment and neighbors.

Forget what they told you about other writing systems - writing Japanese is ridiculously hard! When I started to learn the language, they hit me with one syllabary after another: hiragana, then katakana. But those didn't set me back much.

Kanji on the other hand... See, you may have heard that kanji are symbols for words. Nope. I found out they're more like playing a game of charades with a really bad teammate who gives you vague hints combined with obscure sounds-like clues that are way out of date.
