Can a good education provide an escape from poverty?
OFFICIAL FULL FILM 2012
In ancient times in China, education was the only way out of poverty -- in recent times it has been the best way. China's economic boom and talk of the merits of hard work have created an expectation that to study is to escape poverty. But these days China's higher education system only leads to jobs for a few, educating a new generation to unemployment and despair.

In this talk, Dorinda Carter Andrews challenges us to consider how gaps in critical consciousness and mindsets for adults and students in schools prevent us from providing equitable schooling experiences for all students. Specifically, Carter Andrews urges educators to consider how increased critical consciousness about the role of race and culture in teaching and learning can be fostered through educator professional development and student curriculum and can ultimately strengthen teacher-student relationships. A shifted focus on closing consciousness gaps can address the equity imperative embedded in the larger discourse about achievement gaps.
On February 11, Dorinda received the MSU 2014 Outreach Scholarship Community Partner Award for her collaboration with school districts to close achievement gaps. Further, on March 1, she received the Alumni of Color Achievement Award at the 2014 Alumni of Color Conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Dorinda Carter Andrews is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University where she teaches courses on racial identity development, urban education, critical multiculturalism, and critical race theory. Dr. Carter Andrews is a Core Faculty member in the African American and African Studies program and a Faculty Leader in the Urban Educators Cohort Program, a program designed to prepare MSU pre-service students for teaching careers in urban contexts.

Joshua Katz is a high school math teacher in Orange County, FL.
Joshua's Talk:
In the mid 1800's, Horace Mann captured the potential impact of education on society. We have yet to realize the potential he saw, and in fact, we are missing the mark by a wider and wider margin. We have created a "Toxic Culture of Education" in our country that is damaging students, impacting our economy, and threatening our future. Since the passage of No Child Left Behind, we have embraced a culture of high stakes testing and are perpetuating a false sense of failure in our schools. We have ignored research and data on effective policy making practices in order to serve the interest of private industries that have monetized our students. The impact is being felt in communities, on college campuses, and in our economy. The solution lies in a common sense approach to student development, curriculum choice, career exploration, and relevant data analysis. This talk will present a vision of an education system that allows us to embrace our full potential if we only had the courage to ask "Why Not"?

Today we’ll explore the history of education as a social institution, with a specific focus on how the US organizes its educational system. We’ll look at education through the lenses of some sociological paradigms: structural functionalist approaches (including some of the manifest and latent functions associated with education), and a symbolic interactionist approach to education that shows us how self-fulfilling prophecies in educational settings contribute to differences in academic outcomes for students.

How to Get Education Loan in Hindi | By Ishan
Cost of education in India is anywhere between 5 lakhs and 12 lakhs for undergraduate engineering courses. For medical courses in India, the fees can rise up to 50 lakhs in private colleges. Business schools in India charge more than Rs 10 lakh. In abroad, cost of higher education is much higher. Again, fees in private colleges are always more than the government colleges. Under such circumstances, students look for education loans in India. With so many banks offering education loans, it is also very confusing for parents and students to choose the best one.
Why do you have to choose education loan rather than a personal loan?:
Many parents might feel that taking a personal loan for higher education is beneficial. But as a matter of fact, this is not true. You take personal loan at a higher rate of interest and you end up paying more. Instead, an education loan comes with a number of benefits and conveniences and is specially meant to be given for education which serves the purpose of the students.
Benefits of Education Loans
*Applicable for all: Any student who wants to study can apply for an education loan. Even the economically backward sections of the society can take education loans under the government-sponsored subsidy schemes such as ‘Central Scheme to provide Interest subsidy’ (CSIS).
*Applicable for all courses: Education loan can be used to pursue all types of courses — graduation, post-graduation, diploma courses, vocational courses — whether in India or in foreign universities.
*Easily available: Education loans are widely and easily available. In fact, they are a priority product in all banks as per the RBI’s guidelines.
*Varied loan amounts: Banks can offer loans anywhere between Rs. 2 lakhs and 22 lakhs for studying in India. Of course, the size of the loan depends on the course applied for. To study abroad, the loan amount goes up to Rs.20 lakhs.
*Helps in completion of education: The expense curve of education is increasing with inflation and shifting prices. To avoid hindrances in studies, education loans become essential.
*Benefits: Education loans include many additional benefits like caution deposits, library fees, building deposits, laboratory fees, tuition, examination fees, hostel fees, money for buying books, instruments and uniform, travel expenses for studies abroad, etc.
Low interest rate for females: Usually female students are offered loans at lower interest rates.
*Easy repayment: Also, another great advantage of education loan is that the loan amount need not be repaid immediately. The repayment tenure can extend up to 5 to 7 years after the completion of the course. This makes it easy for repayment.
Some basic requirements need to be fulfilled while taking a loan. These conditions are as follows:
*1.The main determinants are the fees of the course to be pursued and the applicant’s annual family income.
*2.There must be a co-applicant, which can be either one of the parents or sibling or spouse.
*3.Loans below Rs.4 lakh do not require a guarantor or security.
*4.For loans above Rs. 4 lakh, there should be a third-party guarantor.
*5.For loan amount more than Rs. 7.5 lakh, a collateral is necessary.
*6.For studying abroad, a student must also look for part-time jobs or sponsorship as the loan amount itself is not sufficient.
*7.Insurance is compulsory for studying abroad.

Education may be the key to solving broader American inequality, but we have to solve educational inequality first. Harvard’s Ronald Ferguson, director of The Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University, says there is progress being made, there are encouraging examples to emulate, that an early start is critical, and that a lot of hard work lies ahead. But he also says, “There’s nothing more important we can do."
