Honest Review of Republic Wireless - Cheapest Cell Phone Carrier

Having been a republic wireless member for 3 months now, it’s time for an official review. I’ll break this review into the different aspects of purchasing and using the Republic Wireless service.


Republic Wireless is like any other tech startup - with it’s slick website design and minimalistic options. I really dig it, and it was easy to pick out the phone I wanted. Back in May 2015, the options were the Moto X for $299 or the Moto G for $149. I picked the Moto G because of the cheaper price point, and because I was already making a big step up from my 5+ year old LG flip phone.

With Republic Wireless, you have to pay up front for one of their phones which has their special software installed. It’s based off of the Android system, so you’ll get all of the apps in the Google Play store.


Choosing a Plan

The beauty of Republic Wireless is the lack of contracts and the multiple options for data and/or cell coverage.

The Plans:

All plans include Unlimited Talk, Text, and Data over wifi. And they include unlimited Talk, Text, and your choice of Data coverage over cell.

$5 Starting at $5, you can get a phone that makes calls over Wifi. This is a great option for a work phone in your office. But it won’t help if you’re Republic Wireless Plandriving around town.
$10* This is the base plan which includes cell coverage with no data. This is the plan that I chose. Again, switching from a dumb phone to a smart phone was a big enough step. I hate the idea of being connected 24/7, so this plan allows me to not get emails and Facebook requests when I’m out enjoying the world. It does easily connect to Wifi whenever I need it to (which is in most stores, restaurants, schools, places now).
Above the basic no-data plans are several Data plans. Since I purchased, there are new options. They include:

$17.50 for 0.5 GB of data
$25 for 1 GB of data
$40 for 2 GB of data
$55 for 3 GB of data
All of these prices are very competitive because you don’t have to pay any other monthly fees. There are no contracts. And you can actually upgrade or downgrade your plan whenever you want.

Bonus, you’ll get paid for data that you don’t use. So if you get the $40 2 GB plan but only use 1.5 GB of data, you’ll only be charged $32.50 (or $7.50 off for the unused data).

Someday, I might want data coverage. Republic Wireless allows me to switch my plan whenever.

The best part about my plan: Each month, I am billed a total of $11.19 - that’s it!

Who is Republic Wireless for?

Anyone who wants a cheaper and more flexible phone plan
Anyone who doesn’t care about the specific phone they use (no iPhone or Galaxy users here!)
Anyone who can do a little trouble shooting that comes with having an Android device
Anyone who doesn’t want a contract anchoring them down
Anyone who likes supporting smaller companies that make the world a better place
