How is ubiquitous technology affecting the classroom of the 21st century? Joel Handler shares his findings from Hillsborough (NJ), one of Google-for-Education's pilot school districts in the US. With all students having their own individual device, collaborative note-taking, (inter)national video sessions and asynchronous learning are changing education into a remarkably different kind of classroom.

As Director of Technology in Hillsborough schools, Joel Handler has been instrumental in implementing a novel approach to using technology as the means of learning. He has observed how changing the paradigm of school classrooms to be creative and interactive will lead to more in-depth collaboration and more engaged students. ​ Joel holds two masters degrees, one in Computer Science and another in Educational Administration from Rutgers University, and has recently been ​nominated as a member of the 2015 Consortium for School Networking Volunteer Hall of Fame.

Understanding the British school and educational system. You start with nursery and then you go to primary and secondary schools before making a choice as to whether you want to go on to a college or sixth form and then perhaps onto university or vocational studies. Lots to get through so sit tight!

The reason why we've made this video is because everywhere in the world has different education systems and they can be so hard to understand. When you meet Americans, for instance, 'college' means 'university' and suddenly there's lots of different words like Sophomore and Freshman being thrown around and it's all very hard to understand. We hope this video helps to clear up some confusion!

Of course none of this applies if you are one of the lucky British children that get chosen to go to Hogwarts!

"It's absolutely true that school makes people show up, sit down, shut up and that these are useful skills for people to have in adulthood, " says Bryan Caplan, a professor of economics at George Mason University, who blogs at EconLog, and is the author of the new book The Case Against Education: Why the Education System Is a Waste of Time and Money. "So the real question is if all we're trying to do is prepare people for a job, why not prepare them with a job?"

Caplan argues that schools are not only overpriced, but that traditional education fails to prepare students with job skills that reflect the needs of the labor market.

Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Caplan to make the case that the government needs to spend so much on education if it isn't relevant to our success in getting a job and earning higher wages.

What were the myths people usually confuse with playing games in learning? Chris is going to tell us the answer

Dr. Christopher See took his medical degree at Trinity College, Cambridge University, and worked as a junior doctor in several UK hospitals. He completed a PGCE in clinical education with the University of Edinburgh and went on to take a teaching post at Manchester University Medical School, where he received the Excellent Teacher Award for the Faculty in 2012.
He is currently completing his PhD research in the application of e-learning and game-based learning in medical training at the University of Hong Kong. He has published in peer-reviewed publications include the journal Rheumatology and the Imperial College Press, as well as 7 book titles with publisher Kogan Page.
He is a keen science communicator, winning the science presenting competition Famelab in 2013 and hosting public lectures at the HK Science Museum and Café Scientifique. Oh, and he really loves games. You’ll see.

The World Education Forum, 18-22 May 2015, was held in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The Forum adopted on 21 May 2015 the Declaration on the Future of Education. The Incheon Declaration was welcomed by the global education community, including government ministers from more than 130 countries, non-governmental organizations and youth groups. The declaration is a transformative vision for education over the next 15 years, it encourages countries to provide inclusive, equitable, quality education and life-long learning opportunities for all. The Incheon Declaration underpins the education targets in the Sustainable Development Goals that will be ratified at the United Nations in September 2015.
