Previous video: Collaboration / Finnish Education http://youtu.be/-12mquzsHl4

Paul Romani (M.Ed.) from Pear Tree Education talks about student-centered learning in 21st century education.

Also, Paul talks the differences between teacher-centered and student-centered classes, and what to look for. He goes on to discuss project-based learning as the solution to implementing truly student-centered classes.

At the end of the video, Paul gives a real-life example of a teacher-centered class to prove just how bad those kinds of classes really are!

This is the fifth in a series of videos discussing these different elements of 21st century education.

Pear Tree Education is a 21st century education after-school learning centre based in Vancouver, B.C.

Statement regarding the purpose and effect of the technology
(NB: this statement reflects personal opinions of the authors and not of their organizations)

We believe that telepresence technologies in AR, VR and other media are to transform the world in the not-so-distant future. Shifting a part of human life-like communication to the virtual and augmented worlds will have several positive effects. It will lead to a reduction in long-distance travel and short-distance commute. It will democratize education, and improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. It will distribute jobs more fairly and uniformly around the World. It will better connect relatives and friends separated by distance. To achieve all these effects, we need to make human communication in AR and VR as realistic and compelling as possible, and the creation of photorealistic avatars is one (small) step towards this future. In other words, in future telepresence systems, people will need to be represented by the realistic semblances of themselves, and creating such avatars should be easy for the users. This application and scientific curiosity is what drives the research in our group, including the project presented in this video.

We realize that our technology can have a negative use for the so-called “deepfake” videos. However, it is important to realize, that Hollywood has been making fake videos (aka “special effects”) for a century, and deep networks with similar capabilities have been available for the past several years (see links in the paper). Our work (and quite a few parallel works) will lead to the democratization of the certain special effects technologies. And the democratization of the technologies has always had negative effects. Democratizing sound editing tools lead to the rise of pranksters and fake audios, democratizing video recording lead to the appearance of footage taken without consent. In each of the past cases, the net effect of democratization on the World has been positive, and mechanisms for stemming the negative effects have been developed. We believe that the case of neural avatar technology will be no different. Our belief is supported by the ongoing development of tools for fake video detection and face spoof detection alongside with the ongoing shift for privacy and data security in major IT companies.

Ancient Greek is a language like no other. It records an astonishing array of great works in different genres, stretching across a thousand years of history.

Homer, one of the most influential poets ever, recited in the matchless cadences of the epic literary Greek dialect. The Apostle Paul, the Four Evangelists, and the other authors of the New Testament also left their accounts in Greek, using Koine, the beautifully clear conversational Greek spoken in the eastern Mediterranean of their day. Likewise, Sappho, Euripides, Aristophanes, Herodotus, Plato, Demosthenes, and many other ancient authors wrote in Greek, each with a distinct style that makes their individual voices live across the centuries.

After just a few hours of Greek 101: Learning an Ancient Language, you’ll understand why no translation can capture the expressive power of this incomparable tongue.

In some ways simpler than English, in other ways more complex, Greek is a delight to study. As you work through these 36 engaging half-hour lessons, mastering the graceful alphabet, the precision of the nouns and verbs, the endlessly flexible syntax, you’ll become comfortable with Ancient Greek.

With no prior experience required, Greek 101 gives beginners direct access to a remarkable heritage. Covering all of the topics in a typical year of introductory ancient Greek at the college level, these user-friendly lessons focus on teaching you to read unadapted passages from Homer’s Iliad and the New Testament—two of the most important works in the Greek language, which have for centuries inspired people from all walks of life to learn ancient Greek.

Your guide is Professor Hans-Friedrich Mueller of Union College in Schenectady, New York, an award-winning educator who gives classical language teaching a whole new image. Gone is the drudgery of glacially slow progress that is associated with traditional instruction in ancient languages. Instead, Professor Mueller quickly introduces you to authentic Greek, and he presents his subject with charm, wit, and consummate skill in making Greek logical and understandable.

In this free lecture: Learn the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet using the restored classical pronunciation, recognizing that there was some variation in pronunciation in an ancient world. Practice pairings of vowels called dipthongs, and sound out a selection of words that you will soon be reading in sentences.

In this talk, Niema Moshiri talks about his experience as a student in a massive classroom, and how this to his goal of rethinking education. As classroom sizes continue to increase, he illustrates the benefits of adaptive online education as a replacement for the traditional classroom.

Alexander Niema Moshiri is currently a Ph.D. student in the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology program at the University of California, San Diego. He works on computational biology, with a research focus on phylogenetics and phylogenomics. Aside from research, Niema places a heavy emphasis on teaching, namely on the development of online educational content, primarily Massive Adaptive Interactive Texts (MAITs). For the past few years, he has worked with Dr. Pavel Pevzner and Dr. Phillip Compeau in the development of the Bioinformatics Specialization Track on Coursera, and has separately co-authored a free online MAIT on Data Structures that is being used at UCSD and USD.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Peter is a school principal with a radical solution, no school bell, no school levels, staff selection and curriculum is even decided by students. Result? No bullying, collaboration, innovation in school dynamics.

Peter Hutton hated his own school experience, where he felt that education was being done “to him”. As Principal of Templestowe College he developed an educational model that allows students to individualize their education and share control in the running of the school.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

In this episode, Karen continues on in her journey to learn about logic ICs. She started with logic gates, then moved onto combination logic devices like muxes, demuxes, encoders, and decoders. This time she looks into sequential logic devices starting with flip-flops. In this episode, we learn about SR Latches, D-type flip-flops, and JK flip-flops. To understand the following devices, you may want to brush up on your logic gates. You’ll see AND, NAND, and NOR gates used to explain the function of these flip-flops. Follow along with Karen in this lesson to learn about latches, the difference between data inputs and clock signals, and what makes a JK flip-flop better than an SR flip-flop: http://bit.ly/2okdKeF

'Stop teaching calculating, start learning maths' - Conrad Wolfram on how re-conceptualized maths in education can step up to real-world needs.

The importance of maths to jobs, society and thinking has exploded over the last few decades. Meanwhile, maths education fails to match-up. Why has this chasm opened up? Computers are central: when they do the calculating, people work on harder questions, try more concepts, and play with a multitude of new ideas. Conrad Wolfram explained why this fundamental shift is needed in education, and described the major project he's founded to build a dramatically new, problem-centric, computer-based maths curriculum. He asked which country could adopt a computer-based approach first, and leapfrog others in STEM.
