Pros:
Laudable performance, Thin and lightweight body, Surprisingly good audio quality

Cons:
Disappointing build quality, No full-size HDMI port, Occasional lag in touchpad

Verdict:
Notwithstanding its questionable build quality, the Asus VivoBook S14 S406U is a great buy for those seeking good performance under half a lakh rupees.

The ASUS S14 VivoBook is a thin and light device, which is really portable on the use. Since this Vivo VivoBook S14 ultrabook weighs just 1.4Kg, it doesn’t break your back even when carrying it around. Talking about the display, the ultrabook comes with a 14-inch display featuring Full-HD resolution. However, I don’t consider the ASUS VivoBook S14 display ideal for the content creators. The device falls short in terms of color gamut. With only 57% of NTSC Color Gamut, it is just fine for normal office works, media consumptions and gaming. Since I am more into the color accuracy of the laptops, I did not quite enjoy using the device in my Asus S14 review period.

On the performance side, the ASUS VivoBook S14 features the Core i5-8250U processor with 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM (2400MHz). However, the laptop comes with a HDD rather than a SSD due to which software on the device loaded up really slow. For the gaming, the device comes with GeForce MX 150 graphics card. With this setup, the ASUS S14 gaming was fairly decent. I played games like PUBG, CS:GO, FIFA, etc. on this device. My ASUS VivoBook S14 FIFA and ASUS VivoBook S14 CS GO experience was somewhat delightful since the game ran with decent frame rates. However, my ASUS VivoBook S14 PUBG was absolutely devastating since the game was not playable even in the lowest setting.

Talking about the ASUS S14 VivoBook S430ua battery, the laptop comes with a 40Wh battery, which looks decent in terms of capacity. However, when it comes to the ASUS VivoBook S14 battery life, I was not particularly impressed. The laptop provided only four hours of backup on my normal use. When compared with the ASUS S14 vs Acer Swift 3, I was more impressed with the later one. The Acer Swift provides almost 10 hours of backup on the normal use. So if you are into a prolonged battery backup, you should probably skip the ASUS S14 VivoBook S430un for the Swift 3.

Asus’s new VivoBook S14 is designed, keeping portability in mind much like Acer’s Swift 5 that we recently reviewed. In addition to the stylish design and the new Intel 8th Gen CPUs inside, it’s also pretty aggressively priced. Let’s see how it fares.

Asus has made a mark for itself with its laptop designs. A quick look and you can easily callout that its an Asus. The design of the Vivobook S14 is simple and yet elegant. It is made of plastic, but made to look like metal. The laptop is sturdily built with very little flex. It is available in multiple color options, but our review unit came in soft gold color. The brushed metal finish and the sturdy constrction gives its a premium and luxurious look and feel. When you open the lid, the base raises to an angle. This is designed to improve the airflow and reduce the opearting tempertature. The base goes up like a bridge to reveal the air exhaust at the back base of the laptop along with the speakers. But the speakers are not loud enough. The max volume barely crossed 90 db.

It has 3 USB Ports, one USB C Port and it does not charge via that port, one micro HDMI port, microSD card slot and a 3.5mm port. Though the choice of ports available is a bit weird, it does cover most of the requirments to help you be a road warrior. The DC charging port connects to a proprietory charger which is quite compact for a laptop charger.

The 15 inch vairant has a larger area to accomodate deidcated number keys, but the 14 inch variant sacrifices the number keys to retain the size of each keys. This is a very good decision as the keys are well spaced out and have a good travel distance. It is backlit and the intenstiy can also be controlled. I found it very comfortable to type in the keyboard. The trackpad is huge and it is responsive as well. It has a fingerprint sensor to unlock the laptop, though it has a webcam above the display, this model does not have facial recognition. The fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate.

Display
The S14 Vivobook has a full HD IPS LCD display. The color represenatation on the display is accurate. It has decent brightness levels and good viewing angles. It is not a touch screen diplay. The display is well suited for office work and media consunmption.

Performance

This sleek laptop is also slick in the hardware department. It comes in a choice of Intel core i3, i5 or i7 processor. My review unit has 8th gen 14nm kaby lake i5 processor. It also has 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and 1 TB hard-disk all fitted inside that thin chasis. The S14 is also available in other storage options. It is welcoming to see SSD + HDD combio becoming mainstream in mid-range laptops. The laptop does not have any dedicated graphics card, but it has an integrated intel graphics card.

Battery
In the battery department, the Vivobook S14 can last somewhere between 5 to 6 hours depending on your usage.

The Asus Vivobook S14 is a sensible laptop that would suit most of the use-cases for most of the users needing a dependable laptop. It has a stylish design, sleek looks, sufficient performance, decent display and battery. The only negative point, I see is the low powered speakers. But most laptops in this price range have similar performance in speaker and display department. I recently got a Lenovo 330S for my office purpose and I find the Vivobook S14 to be identical to 330s. But the Vivobook S14 has a stylish look which trumps the Lenovo 330S. As we started this post with understanding your usage, if your usage is regular travel, extensive office works, occasional media consumption and mild editing, you can choose the Asus Vivobook S14.
