With plenty of machine learning tools currently available, why would you ever choose an artificial neural network over all the rest? This clip and the next could open your eyes to their awesome capabilities! You'll get a closer look at neural nets without any of the math or code - just what they are and how they work. Soon you'll understand why they are such a powerful tool!

Deep Learning is primarily about neural networks, where a network is an interconnected web of nodes and edges. Neural nets were designed to perform complex tasks, such as the task of placing objects into categories based on a few attributes. This process, known as classification, is the focus of our series.

Classification involves taking a set of objects and some data features that describe them, and placing them into categories. This is done by a classifier which takes the data features as input and assigns a value (typically between 0 and 1) to each object; this is called firing or activation; a high score means one class and a low score means another. There are many different types of classifiers such as Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Naïve Bayes. If you have used any of these tools before, which one is your favorite? Please comment.

Neural nets are highly structured networks, and have three kinds of layers - an input, an output, and so called hidden layers, which refer to any layers between the input and the output layers. Each node (also called a neuron) in the hidden and output layers has a classifier. The input neurons first receive the data features of the object. After processing the data, they send their output to the first hidden layer. The hidden layer processes this output and sends the results to the next hidden layer. This continues until the data reaches the final output layer, where the output value determines the object's classification. This entire process is known as Forward Propagation, or Forward prop. The scores at the output layer determine which class a set of inputs belongs to.

Have you worked with neural nets before? If not, is this clear so far? Please comment.
Neural nets are sometimes called a Multilayer Perceptron or MLP. This is a little confusing since the perceptron refers to one of the original neural networks, which had limited activation capabilities. However, the term has stuck - your typical vanilla neural net is referred to as an MLP.

Before a neuron fires its output to the next neuron in the network, it must first process the input. To do so, it performs a basic calculation with the input and two other numbers, referred to as the weight and the bias. These two numbers are changed as the neural network is trained on a set of test samples. If the accuracy is low, the weight and bias numbers are tweaked slightly until the accuracy slowly improves. Once the neural network is properly trained, its accuracy can be as high as 95%.

Globally 617 million – or six out of ten – children and adolescents are unable to read a simple sentence or handle a basic mathematics calculation, according to data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS). To address the global learning crisis, robust monitoring is needed to track whether children and adults are gaining the skills they need to thrive in today’s world. This video presents the tools developed by the UIS to measure learning and how to use the data to improve learning outcomes.

Synthesizing Obama: Learning Lip Sync from Audio
Supasorn Suwajanakorn, Steven M. Seitz, Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman
SIGGRAPH 2017

Given audio of President Barack Obama, we synthesize a high quality video of him speaking with accurate lip sync, composited into a target video clip. Trained on many hours of his weekly address footage, a recurrent neural network learns the mapping from raw audio features to mouth shapes. Given the mouth shape at each time instant, we synthesize high quality mouth texture, and composite it with proper 3D pose matching to change what he appears to be saying in a target video to match the input audio track

Singapore is one of the highest-achieving school systems in the world yet teachers have relatively fewer instructional hours compared to teachers in the U.S. As a senior teacher at Kranji Secondary School in Singapore, Rosmiliah's typical work week involves only 12–14 hours of academic teaching. This film follows a day in the life of Rosmiliah and provides intriguing insight into how teacher time is managed in Singapore.

"Time for Learning: A Day in the Life of a Singaporean Teacher," is a product of the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) study, “Comparative Study of Time Use in Schools.” Sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the study examines policies and practices related to teacher quality used by high-achieving jurisdictions.

UNESCO’s Futures of Education initiative aims to rethink how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet. Looking to 2050 and beyond, the initiative seeks to reimagine how education and knowledge can contribute to the global common good. The initiative is catalyzing a global debate on how knowledge, education and learning need to be reimagined in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and precarity.

This initiative mobilizes the many rich ways of being and knowing in order to leverage humanity’s collective intelligence. It relies on a broad, open consultative process that involves youth, educators, civil society, governments, business and other stakeholders. The work is being guided by a high-level International Commission of thought-leaders from diverse fields and different regions of the world. In late 2021, the commission will publish a global report designed to share a forward looking vision on how education and learning can enable us to become what we want to become.

Apereo webinar examining two critical standards in learning analytics space - xAPI, and IMSGlobal Caliper. The presenters are Aaron Silver, from DISC, the organisation tasked with xAPI interoperability and conformance (http://datainteroperability.org/ ), and Anthony Whyte of the University of Michigan, who has been centrally involved in recent IMS Caliper developments.

The drive to deliver education at scale coupled with a demand for accountability backed by measurability has spurred the application of “big data” principles to the business of education. Opportunities to tap new data sources have grown as both the learning technology ecosystem has expanded and the definition of what constitutes learning has evolved beyond the formal classroom experience to include informal, social and experiential modes of acquiring knowledge and skills. The challenges implicit | inherent in describing, collecting and exchanging learner activity data originating from such diverse sources are formidable. In response, two learning technology specifications, ADL’s xAPI and IMS Global’s Caliper Analytics, now offer standardized approaches that aim to address the data and semantic interoperability issues inherent in the blending | sharing of learning data between systems. For both communities, early work has focused on developing a RESTful architecture for mediating machine-to-machine data exchange and grappling with the challenge of defining an information model and controlled vocabularies that leverage semantic web principles and practices. Join Aaron Silvers and Anthony Whyte for a lively discussion of the current state and possible futures of both xAPI and Caliper.

The views expressed in this video are the presenters own.
