Rebekah Hagstrom is headmaster of Liberty Classical Academy (LCA). Rebekah received a B.S. in communication disorders (summa cum laude) and an M.A. in speech pathology from the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Peter, have four children. Rebekah worked at Regions Hospital as a speech pathologist for over 10 years. She also taught adult education classes at her church, served on
its board, and spoke at various women's ministry events. In raising their children, Peter and Rebekah experienced public education, private college prep schools, and private religious schools. With these schools falling short of their educational expectations, Rebekah founded Liberty Classical Academy.

Cost of education in India is anywhere between 5 lakhs and 12 lakhs for undergraduate engineering courses. For medical courses in India, the fees can rise up to 50 lakhs in private colleges. Business schools in India charge more than Rs 10 lakh. In abroad, cost of higher education is much higher. Again, fees in private colleges are always more than the government colleges. Under such circumstances, students look for education loans in India. With so many banks offering education loans, it is also very confusing for parents and students to choose the best one.

Why do you have to choose education loan rather than a personal loan?:

Many parents might feel that taking a personal loan for higher education is beneficial. But as a matter of fact, this is not true. You take personal loan at a higher rate of interest and you end up paying more. Instead, an education loan comes with a number of benefits and conveniences and is specially meant to be given for education which serves the purpose of the students.

Benefits of Education Loans

*Applicable for all: Any student who wants to study can apply for an education loan. Even the economically backward sections of the society can take education loans under the government-sponsored subsidy schemes such as ‘Central Scheme to provide Interest subsidy’ (CSIS).

*Applicable for all courses: Education loan can be used to pursue all types of courses — graduation, post-graduation, diploma courses, vocational courses — whether in India or in foreign universities.

*Easily available: Education loans are widely and easily available. In fact, they are a priority product in all banks as per the RBI’s guidelines.

*Varied loan amounts: Banks can offer loans anywhere between Rs. 2 lakhs and 22 lakhs for studying in India. Of course, the size of the loan depends on the course applied for. To study abroad, the loan amount goes up to Rs.20 lakhs.

*Helps in completion of education: The expense curve of education is increasing with inflation and shifting prices. To avoid hindrances in studies, education loans become essential.

*Benefits: Education loans include many additional benefits like caution deposits, library fees, building deposits, laboratory fees, tuition, examination fees, hostel fees, money for buying books, instruments and uniform, travel expenses for studies abroad, etc.
Low interest rate for females: Usually female students are offered loans at lower interest rates.

*Easy repayment: Also, another great advantage of education loan is that the loan amount need not be repaid immediately. The repayment tenure can extend up to 5 to 7 years after the completion of the course. This makes it easy for repayment.

Some basic requirements need to be fulfilled while taking a loan. These conditions are as follows:

*1.The main determinants are the fees of the course to be pursued and the applicant’s annual family income.
*2.There must be a co-applicant, which can be either one of the parents or sibling or spouse.
*3.Loans below Rs.4 lakh do not require a guarantor or security.
*4.For loans above Rs. 4 lakh, there should be a third-party guarantor.
*5.For loan amount more than Rs. 7.5 lakh, a collateral is necessary.
*6.For studying abroad, a student must also look for part-time jobs or sponsorship as the loan amount itself is not sufficient.
*7.Insurance is compulsory for studying abroad.

Waldorf education is based on the principles of Anthroposophy by Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner founded the first school in 1919 Stuttgart Germany to educate the children of the factory workers from the Waldorf Astoria Zigaretten Fabrik - hence the name. All kids, independent of social status or talent received the same instruction, which made the school a pioneer of social justice in education.

The goal of a Waldorf education is to develop free, but morally responsible individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence and creative capabilities. Factual knowledge, homework and tests scores receive less attention. Storytelling and experimentation are the main method of instruction, textbooks are being avoided.

Over the twelve-year curriculum, students learn math, literature, history and science as well as a wide variety of arts and hands-on skills. Elementary students paint, knit, weave and sculpt with wax. Older ones make patterns, books, pottery and sculpt in stone. Everybody learns to do music. First all play the flute, then some play string instruments and others join the choir.

Students play non-competitive games and learn to dance eurhythmy. They do organic farming and learn two foreign languages, which in the first years are taught through songs, storytelling and conversations. In grade 8 and 12 the entire class develops a classical drama which they perform in front of their parents and friends.

Waldorf uses a unique project based approach to almost all main academic subjects. Instead of repetitive schedules, a specific subject, such as history, math, science or even gardening dominates the first two hours in the morning for a period of 4-6 weeks. After that, a new subject gets the main focus.

Steiner also invented an experiential approach to science whereby students observe and later describe scientific concepts in their own words and drawings rather than learning about them in a textbook first. Waldorf schools therefore consider computers useful to children only in their teens, after they have mastered fundamental, time-honored ways of discovering information and learning.

In the spirit of personal development and empathy, competition and grades are being avoided. Teachers instead assess the student’s individual growth of character. Tests scores and grades are only slowly introduced to older students as they prepare for college and entrance exams.

Today there are over a thousand Waldorf schools in 60 countries, making it one of the largest independent school movements. Waldorf has become a recognised educational theory in Europe and its schools have received state funding.

Rather than the usual California-based event in March, this year Apple took its team to Chicago to make its spring announcements, most of which revolved around a new iPad geared toward the education market. In addition, the company also introduced updates to iWork, a new app for teachers, and a new stylus called Crayon that’ll also work with the new iPad.

Leading cardiologists Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart and Herschel Sklaroff, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, Cardiology at Mount Sinai Heart were filmed for one-month for the “Making Rounds” documentary film as they cared for critically-ill heart patients in the Cardiac Care Unit at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
